This cover can be extended to include own damage cover Third Party Only, provides cover in respect of death or injury to third parties and damage to property belonging to others and is the minimum cover required by law. This cover can be extended to include Fire & Theft cover. Van Insurance OverviewThere are over ¼ of a million road traffic accidents and 300, 000 road related casualties in the UK every year. Around 25% to 33% of serious and fatal road accidents involved a victim that was 'at work' at the time. According to a recent police report over 47,000 commercial vehicles are stolen each year from British businesses. This is estimated to equate to £152 Million in lost assets, not including any additional costs such as renting vans, increased insurance premiums, loss of earnings etc. Van Insurance CoverIn the UK you must by law have a minimum amount of cover in order to drive on the road with your van. You must insure third parties for accidental death or injury arising from use of the vehicle. This is known as third party insurance and will only cover your vehicle for third party damage and not if the van is stolen or is maliciously or accidentally damaged. In order to cover your van for theft and accidental damage you will need to increase the level of cover you require from third party only to third party fire & theft or comprehensive insurance. Third Party Only Van InsuranceThird party only insurance only covers you for damage or injury to a third party. You will not be covered at all for personal injury, or damage to your vehicle. TPO insurance covers you against any claims made that arise from a motoring accident. This is the minimum level of cover required by law in which allows you to drive on the road. If you have had an accident and you are proven to be at fault, your insurance company will pay the money that is owed by law to any injured parties, and even to those killed in an accident. If you have damaged property, this will also be covered. Any legal costs incurred will also be covered. If you have an accident and are proven to be at fault, your insurance company will pay for the compensation awarded against you. If your vehicle is damaged and you are proven to be at fault then your insurance company will not pay for the damages to your van just to the third parties. Third Party Fire & Theft Van InsuranceThird party insurance only protects you against any claims made against you as a result of having an accident. The fire and theft aspect covers you against damage to, or loss of your vehicle due to it being stolen or set on fire. Under third party fire & theft you will also be covered for legal costs for e.g. Costs for a solicitor. If you have the misfortune of having your van stolen or damaged by a thief, with a third party fire and theft policy you will be able to make a claim, providing you have reported the theft to the police. Comprehensive Cover Van InsuranceComprehensive cover gives you full risks cover for your van. In simple terms, it means that you can claim for any damage caused to your van by any means, apart from exclusions that can be found in the small print. In addition to allowing you to claim for the damage caused to your van in an accident, with comprehensive van insurance cover, you can also claim for acts of vandalism, theft, or any other accidental damage to your van which does not involve a crash. Also included in comprehensive insurance is glass cover or windscreen cover. The insurance company will probably have an arrangement with a specialist glass firm - if go to their specialist you will probably only pay the excess, which is usually around £50.00. If you only have a small crack or chip in the windscreen, you can normally get it repaired for free and there should be no excess. Should you need to make a claim on your windscreen cover, this will have no effect on your 'no claims bonus'. Always remember that no policy will cover you for every single thing. Comprehensive insurance ('fully comp' or 'all risks') is at times a bit misleading and can give a false impression that you are covered for every possibility. On every policy, you will find exclusions in the small print relating to your excess, such as electrical and mechanical breakdowns. The excess on your insurance policy must be paid no matter whom is at fault, whether your van is totally written off, or just mildly scratched. You will have to pay it because you entered into a contract. If you are not at fault, you will be able to claim your excess back from the other person's insurance company. If you are comprehensively insured and you cannot use your van, then most insurance companies will provide you with a temporary hire van whilst you van is being repaired. Some comprehensive van insurance policies will also allow you to drive other people's vans, although there may be severe limitations to this.
